Britain continues to support innovation in Cyprus

Over recent months the British High Commission has supported a series of Innovation Workshops delivered by the Northern Ireland Cooperation Overseas (NICO) in Famagusta, Kyrenia and Nicosia.

The workshops gave innovators and entrepreneurs an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of starting a business and preparing initial business plans.

A reception was held at the Shakespeare House in Nicosia which brought together all the participants and the stakeholders. Deputy High Commissioner Ian Whitting and NICO Director John McKinney presented the participants with their certificates.

Deputy High Commissioner Ian Whitting said: “The British High Commission and NICO recognise the importance of innovation and entrepreneurship. High levels of innovation and entrepreneurship are key drivers of economic growth, competitiveness and job and wealth creation.”

He added: “These workshops were developed with the aim of identifying innovators and entrepreneurs who could potentially benefit from the support and services available from the entrepreneurial hub in the old town of Nicosia. I have no doubt most of you will welcome this facility and find the services beneficial…this is not the end of the journey, rather the beginning of an exciting challenge for you and I wish you every success for the future.”

As a next step in innovation and entrepreneurship, the British High Commission is working with Lead Cyprus on the ‘Jump on the bus’ initiative, where innovators will participate in events in different cities, linking up likeminded entrepreneurs from across the island. The first ‘Jump on the Bus’ took place on 16 March and the second is scheduled for 23 March. The bus will start from Nicosia (Ledra Palace), picking up people from Kyrenia and heading to Famagusta for another interesting discussion.
