Tepak and UCy score well in Times’ college rankings

The University of Cyprus (UCy) has remained at number 30 on the Emerging Economies University Rankings 2019 conducted by Times Higher Education, while the University of Technology (Tepak) fell five places this year to 42.

Both Cyprus institutions that were included in the rankings were found to have improved their citations (research influence) this year compared to the year before, though Tepak slipped due to a drop in its teaching score, while UCy shared its spot at position 30 with Estonia’s University of Tartu.

The prestigious annual ranking for emerging economies spans 43 countries across four continents, comprising nearly 450 universities in 2019, and includes only institutions in countries classified by the FTSE as ‘advanced emerging’, ‘secondary emerging’ and ‘frontier’.

Cyprus was included as a country with a frontier market, a type of developing country which is more developed than the least developing countries, but too small, risky, or illiquid to be generally considered an emerging market.

According to the Times Higher Education website – “the rankings use the same 13 performance indicators as the World University Rankings to judge institutions on their teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. But they are recalibrated to reflect the development priorities of universities in emerging economies.”

China remains the most-represented nation in the 2019 listing, with 72 institutions, up from 63 last year, the site noted, adding that the nation claims four of the table’s top five positions and seven of the top 10.
