The Cleanest Coasts in Europe

Cyprus has once again topped the list for the cleanest bathing waters in Europe with a 100% rating for its 112 beaches, which all have ‘excellent’ water quality. Out of the 28 European member states, only Cyprus and Luxemburg achieved a 100% rating.

The island also holds a large number of Blue Flag beaches with a record total of 57 across the island for 2013/2014. Cyprus also holds three records: for the most Blue Flags per capita in the world, the most dense concentration of Blue Flag beaches, and the most Blue Flag beaches per coastline length in the whole world.

The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to beaches and marinas in nearly 50 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and the Caribbean that have met strict criteria; water quality, safety standards, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management.

The island’s coasts are also on various lists of top European coasts on several travel websites. Nissi Bay in Agia Napa is on a list of best beaches compiled by www.europeanbestdestinations.org, Protaras’ Fig Tree Bay beach is one of the top European coasts in the TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Awards 2014, whilst Lara Bay in Pafos ranks in the top European beaches on the Rough Guides website.
