€30m to improve energy efficiency in homes

The energy ministry is set to announce next week a €30 million project to upgrade energy efficiency in homes, minister Natasa Pilides said on Saturday.

According to Pilides, this project, to be announced on Tuesday, is particularly important for achieving Cyprus’ goals for green development and green energy.

The minister said that for the first time, the chance to install energy storage systems is included and smart energy management.

“We hope that there will be interest, that people will embrace this plan and that we will be able to allocate the entire budget so that buildings in need of energy upgrades can be upgraded,” Pilides told the Cyprus News Agency. She said that it was important for people to embrace the idea of renovating old buildings instead of just opting to construct new ones.

The budget – €30m – is much higher than in previous years, Pilides said, adding that this year the process is automated. This will help applicants and the evaluation process will be much faster.

The project is co-financed by European funds.

Schemes for public buildings and businesses will follow, she said.
