450 state schools to have solar panels by next year

The installation of photovoltaic panels in 450 state schools will be completed next year with a total budget of €10 million, Environment Commissioner Kleila Vasiliou said on Thursday.

“The project not only supports our target for the use of renewable energy sources, but also agrees with the requirements of the European Green Deal,” she said.

On Thursday, the ministers of energy and education visited the first out of 450 state schools which will get PV panels.

Solar panels in schools are part of the actions taken to tackle the climate crisis, Vassiliou said, adding their implementation “activates the ability of schools to cope with the weather conditions by creating a more favourable environment for our children in terms of their learning conditions, while at the same time teaches them to co-exist and use renewable energy sources”.

She also sent a message of support to students and teachers amidst the pandemic and wished for a quick return to our previous daily routine.
