Vehicle registrations in the first two months of 2020 increased by 5.1% compared to the same period in 2019 (7,842 compared to 7,463), according to Statistical Service data published by CNA.
Registrations of saloon cars presented an increase of 2.7%, with numbers rising to 6,309 compared to 6,144 in the same period in 2019.
There were 3,352 saloon cars registered in January 2020 compared to 3,257 in January 2019. February 2020 saw 2,957 saloon registrations compared to 2,887 in the same month of 2019.
Both January and February 2020 saw a reduction in the registration of used cars and an increase in that of new ones, which CNA attributes to the implementation of the government’s scrappage programme to replace old cars with new ones.
In January 2020, registration of new vehicles presented an increase of 19.3% and 16% in February, whereas used car registrations saw a drop of 4.6% and 3.6% respectively.
