A meeting at the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) was held on Tuesday in the presence of representatives of the Commerce, Industry and Tourism Ministry and tourism associations as well as Hermes Airports during which the repercussions of the United Kingdom decision to leave the European Union were examined.

A CTO statement said the organisation has been closely following developments and has been receiving information from its London office, while examining special reports on the fallout Brexit will have on tourism.

The CTO is planning a visit to the UK to meet with strategic market partners, while Cypriot Euro MPs have been asked to help open up channels of communication with the CTO on matters relating to tourism. The CTO has also suggested a ministerial meeting.

Although a lot will depend on developments regarding the EU`s relationship with the UK, currency exchange and the British economy, participants in the meeting ascertained that “Cyprus is not expected to be affected in terms of tourist arrivals this year, although the purchasing power of British tourists has been affected because of the fall of the British sterling”.

The CTO and tourism organisations in Cyprus are in continuous coordination on developments and are closely monitoring the wider geopolitical developments in the region, to adjust their strategic action to benefit tourism.
