Coronavirus: two new cases announced on Tuesday

Two new coronavirus cases and one more death were announced by the health ministry on Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to 903.

A 72-year-old woman with underlying health issues died at Famagusta General. She died with the virus, but not of the virus, national health service (Okypy)’s scientific director, Dr Marios Loizou said.

He added that the deaths with coronavirus rose to 23, while the deaths from the virus remained at 16, split into 11 men and five women with an average age of 71.

Later in the day, the British Bases confirmed one more case among their community in Cyprus, raising the total to 11. The individual was displaying mild symptoms and is in self-isolation the bases said.

Announcing the new cases, virologist Leontios Kostrikis said a total of 1,153 tests were processed on Tuesday, while the two cases both came from tests conducted under private initiative.

“The epidemiological picture remains encouraging. We have entered the second work week since the lifting of lockdown measures, and the finding please the scientific team,” he said.

Commenting on the situation in the hospitals, Loizou said a total of eight people were being treated at the Famagusta General reference hospital, and all of them were in good general condition.

He added three people were also discharged.

Four patients are currently intubated, one at the Limassol General intensive care unit, and three at the Nicosia General unit.

Loizou said in other hospitals a total of three more cases are being treated.

Regarding the situation in Cyprus, Loizou said over the past few weeks, cases have decreased and it is due to the sacrifice of the people.
