Cyprus airports expect record passengers in 2016

Airports operator Hermes expects that by the end of 2016 some 8.5 million passengers will travel through Larnaca and Paphos, a new record.

Based on its data, passenger movement through the two airports has already recorded a 15.9% increase in the first seven months of the year.

“The prospect of breaking another historic record in passenger movement at Cyprus’ airports is the culmination of Hermes’ efforts to enrich the country’s air connectivity even further thus strengthening its tourism industry,” the operator said.

The company expects passenger traffic to peak between Monday, August 8 and Sunday, August 21.

Hermes said 3,600 flights were scheduled for the two weeks in question, carrying some 550,000 people.

Larnaca airport is expected to handle some 2,800 flights in and out of Cyprus with more than 410,000 passengers.

Paphos will see around 800 flights, carrying 140,000 travellers.

The highest increase in passenger traffic is expected from Russia, the UK and Greece, Hermes said.

Residents of the island will travel to Greece mostly, with the majority visiting the Aegean islands.
