Cyprus looks to Middle East for tourism

The Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) and the island’s hotel industry are shifting focus towards specialised tourism markets in the Middle East.

At the recent IBTM Arabia tourism convention in Abu Dhabi last week, CTO and the Cyprus Convention Bureau made a joint presentation promoting Cyprus as a conference tourism and incentive travel destination.

Potential buyers and regional holidaymakers from the Middle East and India showed interest in Cyprus, with a keen eye on new deals during low travel seasons. Cyprus representatives emphasized activities dealing with the everydayness of locals, but also highlighted the organisation of unique events at archaeological sites, villages, and the seaside.

This month, CTO is stepping up its efforts on conference tourism by participating in the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA Mediterranean Chapter). Representatives will also join Confec Red and Meetings Show where they will meet with English and German buyers.

The tourist industry in Cyprus has been trying to find its footing after the closure of Cyprus Airways in January and a series of global market and political shifts, that could potentially reshape the tourism landscape in the region.
