However at the same time the country received low scores for the environmental impact of road transport.
The first ever EU Transport Scoreboard compares Member State performance in 22 transport-relevant categories and highlights for most categories the five top and bottom performers.
Cyprus was among the top five offenders in two categories ‘Maritime Infringements’, which refers to the number of pending infringement proceedings in the field of maritime and inland waterway transport on December 31 2013 and ‘Road Infrastructure’, which reflects motorway density as ratio between the total length of motorways and the population expressed in millions as on January 1, 2012.
But Cyprus was placed towards the bottom in five categories. These included ‘Road Environmental Impact’, which is the average CO2 emissions from passenger cars (gCO2/km) in 2012 (provisional data) and ‘Logistics’ reflecting the relative ease and efficiency with which products can be moved into and inside a country.
The five also included ‘Innovation I’ (Investment by transport companies in research and development, as percentage of GDP in 2010) and ‘Innovation II’ which is based on the question to companies ‘do you innovate?’ in the Community Innovation Survey mostly carried out in 2010.
The fifth category is ‘Other-pending infringements’, which refers to the number of infringement proceedings pending on December 31, that do not relate to a specific mode of transport.
According to the European Commission, the scoreboard’s aim “is to give a snapshot of the diversity of Member State performance in transport matters across Europe and to help them identify and address shortcomings”.
The scoreboard brings together data from a variety of sources such as Eurostat, the European Environment Agency, the World Bank and the OECD. It can be consultedeither by mode of transport (road, rail, maritime, air) or by categories including ‘Single market,’ ‘Infrastructure’, ‘Environmental impact’,’ ‘Safety’, ‘Transposition of EU law’, ‘Infringements of EU law,’ ‘Research and innovation’, and ‘Logistics’.
“The Commission’s intention is to refine the indicators further in the years to come, in dialogue with Member States, industry and other stakeholders,” the recent announcement on the scoreboard said.
