Delegates at the conference discussed the overall framework of the European strategy for an Energy Union, safety supply of energy, competitive energy market, reduction of energy demand and promotion of research and innovation in the energy sector.
During the meeting, Lakkotrypis said that the EU should provide assistance to Cyprus’ efforts to develop its natural gas reserves in its exclusive economic zone, for these reserves will contribute to the economic boost and enhancement of the island’s competitiveness.
He said that the EU will be able to boost its own energy security by exploiting its own sources, adding that for EU to have a united voice towards its foreign partners there should be a better coordination within the Union.
The conference took place in twoparts: the first part was a closed discussion for the Ministers for Energy and the second part was a public event for all the stakeholders with five panel discussions on the key elements of the Energy Union.
