Cyprus to host European maritime security conferenc

Cyprus is hosting a conference on maritime security in the coming week in which over 100 navy delegates from various European countries will participate.

The conference in Nicosia on November 12 and 13 2015 is being organised in cooperation with the European Defence Agency (EDA) and under the auspices of the Luxembourg EU presidency.

The head of the Egyptian navy has also been invited, according to an announcement from the Cyprus defence ministry.

During the conference, delegates will discuss issues such as the new challenges with regard to migratory flows and the need for guarding maritime borders, and search and rescue missions.

It will also discuss the importance of maritime communication in Europe and how the European Maritime Safety Strategy can help to promote civil-military cooperation.

The keynote speaker at the conference will be the new Chairman of the EU Military Committee Gen. Michail Kostarakos, who took office recently.

The head of the EDA, Jorge Domecq, will also attend the conference.
