According to CNA sources, the Ministry of Communications and Works will raise the issue to the next Cabinet’s meeting, proposing as a candidate the Acting Director of the Department of Merchant Shipping Andreas Chrysostomou.
Chrysostomou has served as chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the IMO for many years.
IMO has a huge influence in global shipping industry therefore its leadership is of great importance. In fact, IMO is the only competent international organization in matters relating mainly to maritime safety, protection of the marine environment, and measures against acts of unlawful interference in the marine environment, through the adoption of international conventions and codes.
According to reports published in international media, the Secretary General of the IMO Koji Sekimizu is expected to step down next year, and apart from Cyprus, Denmark, Panama and Mexico are also expected to propose candidates for the position.
