Cyprus to welcome Chinese frigate

Minister of Defence Fotis Fotiou confirms that Limassol harbour is ready to welcome a Chinese frigate accompanying maritime transportation of Syria’s chemical weapons.

Speaking to the media after a meeting with Chinese ambassador to Cyprus Liu Xinsheng, Fotiou said that theYan Cheng frigate will be arriving in Cyprus on Friday 03.01.14. The minister informed the ambassador over the government’s decision to support the United Nations in its efforts to transport and destroy chemical weapons from Syria. “As part of these efforts the Cypriot government will be providing assistance to the Chinese navy.”

Fotiou also assured that Cyprus would not allow any vessels transporting dangerous chemical weapons to dock in Cyprus’ waters. The Yan Cheng will be the first ever Chinese military vessel to stop over in Cyprus. Fotiou is scheduled to visit the frigate and meet its crew after its arrival.
