DEFA says no agreement with gas suppliers reached

The government-owned Natural Gas Public Company, widely known by its Greek acronym DEFA, said that it concluded the tender process for short-term natural gas supply to the Vasilikos power plant without reaching an agreement with any bidder.

“DEFA has been unable to agree terms for a gas supply with any of the respondents to the tender,” the company said in an emailed statement.

Following the decision, taken at a board of directors meeting on Monday, “DEFA has notified all respondents to the tender accordingly,” the statement said.

DEFA’s decision came a day after media reported that the government decided to go directly for a permanent solution, i.e. use natural gas forpower generation from the Aphrodite field, Cyprus’ so far single finding in its offshore territory.
