The European Accessibility Act (EAA), which came into force on 28 June 2025, introduces common EU-wide accessibility requirements for digital products and services such as smartphones, e-books, banking, e-commerce, and transport systems, aiming to ensure equal access for the Union’s 87 million people with disabilities.
While new products must already comply, existing ones have until June 2030 to adapt, with penalties for non-compliance set at Member State level—ranging from fines to imprisonment in Cyprus. The article explores some key provisions, as well as how the Act balances fundamental rights with economic considerations, with its success will dependent on flexible enforcement, meaningful support for companies, and its ability to promote innovation without deterring investment.
