Dismantling of Larnaca LPG facilities to start ‘in a few months’

Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) will be temporarily unloaded at the Vasilikos port, Larnaca mayor Andreas Vyras told the Cyprus News Agency on Thursday, adding that within a few months the demolition of the LPG facilities from the town’s seafront will begin.

“During an inter-ministerial committee that took place on Wednesday at noon, the issue of moving and unloading LPG in Vasilikos was discussed. The dismantling of the facilities from the Larnaca seafront is yet to be completed.”

Vyras added that Hellenic Petroleum has completed the dismantling of its facilities, while Petrolina is at a very advanced stage and is expected to complete the demolition of its own tanks in the next few weeks. Exxon Mobil has undertaken to begin the demolition of its facilities around the beginning of July.

“I will personally liaise with the companies so that there is no further delay in the demolition of their facilities. The liquid fuel tanks occupy about 70 per cent of the Larnaca seafront area,” he said.

Asked about the relocation of the asphalt facilities, Vyras clarified that the permits that allow asphalt companies to use the decommissioned state fuel storage (Ketap) facilities will expire on June 30.

After that day, the Larnaca mayor assured that the facilities will be permanently dismantled and no company will be allowed to operate in the premises.
