Drilling results expected in September 2017

Various developments on Cyprus’ energy scene are expected to come together this autumn, including the results of now ongoing exploratory gas drilling in offshore block 11.

Citing sources, the press reported that the West Capella drillship is proceeding on schedule in its operations in block 11, licensed to a consortium comprising Total and ENI.

The companies are expected to announce the results in September.

In the meantime, other companies with concessions in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone(EEZ) are evaluating geological and seismic data in their respective acreages.

According to the same sources, ENI are currently assessing 3D seismic data but have yet to decide where they will drill next for natural gas. The possibilities are blocks 3, 6 or 8.

On September 6, Exxon Mobil will hold a press conference to discuss global energy prospects and the company’s exploration programme in the Cyprus EEZ.

Exxon Mobil were granted the concession on block 10 in the third licensing round.

To date, the only confirmed gas find in the EEZ is the Aphrodite prospect in block 12, holding an estimated 4.5 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Speaking to the CNA, Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis confirmed he recently held a meeting with officials of companies engaged in the EEZ.

He said operations were proceeding on schedule but declined to provide any details, citing confidentiality.

As regards the mooted EastMed gas pipeline – linking Israel to Cyprus and then onto Greece and Italy – sources said the matter would be at the centre of the agenda during a four-way ministerial conference in Nicosia on December 5.

There, the ministers of the respective countries are expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding.
