Economic cooperation focus of President’s visit to China

Bilateral relations between Cyprus and China, and particularly economic cooperation will be the focus of an upcoming working visit Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades will pay to China.

The Cyprus issue will also be on the agenda. Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides told the press that the visit was particularly important. “We consider that, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has a role to play as regards the Cyprus problem.”

“Through the discussions on our bilateral relations, we will look into the potentials for cooperation in various fields such as transport, tourism and investment attraction.”

Anastasiades will leave for Beijing on Tuesday, accompanied by Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Marios Demetriades and the Government Spokesman. A Cyprus business delegation will also visit China.

On October 14-15, Anastasiades will attend a Special Conference of the Communist Party of the People`s Republic of China on the “Silk Road”. Christodoulides told CNA that Anastasiades will have, on the sidelines of the conference, meetings with other state leaders of the region that will attend the event, noting that Anastasiades was the only EU leader that was invited to the conference.

On October 15, Anastasiades will hold a meeting with the President of China, while on the same day he will attend a dinner hosted in his honour by the Vice President of the country.

During his stay in Beijing, Anastasiades will also deliver a speech at a Chinese University, while on October 17, he will address a business forum organised in the capital of China by the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Anastasiades will then depart for Shanghai where he will hold meetings with the authorities of the city and with big Chinese companies doing business in Cyprus. He will also address a forum organized by the Cyprus Land & Building Developers Association.

He will return home on October 19.
