eIDAS introduces a new, EU-wide legal framework for electronic identification (eID), and trust services, including electronic signatures, seals and documents. The potential of an EU-wide framework for eID is provided, with the introduction of national eID schemes by Member States. These schemes allow the eID of citizens using public services. This is potentially applicable to public services offered by any Member State for all EU citizens. Furthermore, the potential of the eID aspect is great in terms of future use of eID schemes by private businesses.
