Energy sector changing Cyprus

President Nicos Anastasiades said recently that amid rapid changes both in the social and the economic fields, the energy sector in Cyprus is fundamentally changing with regard to its structure, organisation and means of exploitation.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the new member of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) Neophytos Hadjigeorgiou, at the Presidential Palace, Anastasiades said that as part of the short-term actions that it needs to fulfil, CERA has to modernize the regulations for electricity and natural gas licensing, create a framework for the natural gas market and implement the new model for the electricity market.

At the same time, he noted, the fulfilment of the processes for new electricity tariffs is under way, as well as the fulfilment of the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) operational and accounting separation. The President also said that the implementation of the 2020 goals for Renewable Energy Resources is pivotal.

He expressed certainty that CERA will continue to work as it has done so far, collectively, in coordination and showing responsibility, within the framework of the relevant legal framework and following the directives of the government`s and the EU energy policy with a view to address challenges in the framework of its difficult task.
