February 2018 tourism revenue up 13%

Cyprus’ revenue from tourism rose in February 2018 by 13% to €52.7m compared to the respective month of 2017 but tourists from UK drastically reduced their holiday budgets, the statistical service said

In the first two months of the year, total revenue rose an annual 11% to €91.1m, Cystat said in a statement on its website recently.

The increase in revenue was accompanied by an annual 23% increase in arrivals in February, which resulted from an 8.4% drop in average spending in tourist budgets to €519.43, Cystat said. Still, visitors on the island prolonged their length of stay in February by 0.7 days to 9.1.

Visitors from the UK, traditionally Cyprus’ primary source of incoming tourism whose economy plunged into uncertainty two years ago when voters decided to leave the European Union, cut back their holiday spending in February 28% to €509.03 compared to the respective month of 2017, Cystat said. On the other hand, Russian tourists, who make up the second most numerous nationality, spent in February on average €694.94 which is 11% more compared to a year before.

Visitors from Germany and Greece increased their spending in February an annual 2.4% to €607.47 and 3.2% to €349.40 respectively, while those from Israel, spent on average €364.27 which is 10% less than a year before, Cystat said.
