Angelos Tropis, an official with the Health Insurance Organisations (HIO) said expenses for running Gesy in 2020 came to approximately €780 million.

The cost of inpatient care, which came into force in June 2020, he said, was €175 million.

There are around 855,000 beneficiaries of Gesy.

“In the [next] three years when the economy is expected to fully recover from the effects of the pandemic, the fund would appear to be viable,” he said.

This year, Tropis said, expenditure for the health service amounted, in the first two months, to €195 million but he could not say what the revenues were because there is a two-month delay in the collection of data.

The cost of inpatient care in the first two months of 2021 amounted to €88 million.
