On the basis of the results of a survey carried out by the Statistical Service, “the total expenditure for environmental protection activities in industry in 2012 is estimated at €29,6 million, which corresponds to 0.17% of the Gross Domestic Product, compared to €32,2 million or 0.18% in 2011. The corresponding expenditures in the member-states of the European Union are estimated at 0.39% of the Gross Domestic Product.”

By sector of economic activity, the manufacturing industries reported expenditures of €24,6 million, the mining and quarrying industries €2,2 million and the electricity and water supply enterprises €2,8 million, the island’s statistical authority said.

It added that in the manufacturing sector, where the largest amount of expenditure is reported, manufacturing of food products accounted for €7,9 million, manufacturing of other non-metallic mineral products for €7,6 million, manufacturing of beverages for €3,0 million, manufacturing of pharmaceutical products and preparations for €1,3 million and manufacturing of wood and of products of wood for €1,2 million.

By environmental domain, expenditure related to the reduction of air emissions €10,2 million, the monitoring, treatment and disposal of waste €9,3 million, the treatment of wastewater €8,9 million and others (such as the abatement of noise and vibrations, the protection of soil and ground water and the protection of natural resources and biodiversity) €1,2 million, CyStat reported.
