Investments needed to tackle unemployment, says minister

Investments aimed at boosting growth and creating jobs is the only way to tackle unemployment, Minister of Labour Zeta Aimilianidou told the EU Council of Labour and Social Policy, which convened in Brussels recently.

The main topics on the agenda of the Council were general unemployment and youth unemployment with regard to the creation of new jobs. The minister referred to the drafting of the National Action Plan for the employment of young people, which includes measures for promoting small and medium enterprises as well as youth entrepreneurship.

The Council of Ministers also discussed a proposal regarding a directive for a more equal representation of men and women at the boards of stock trading companies, with a view to reach a political agreement among the member states.

Cyprus supported the suggestion and the minister stressed the need to enhance women’s representation at financial decision-making centres.
