The Communications Ministry, together with the Ports Authority, will also press on with the expropriation of land near Zakaki to increase available space at Limassol port to satisfy the needs of companies involved in hydrocarbon exploration to deploy their land-based operations in the area.


“Based on the cabinet’s decisions, Larnaca port will not be turned into an energy or industrial port,” the Communications Ministry said.


The cabinet also decided that companies involved in hydrocarbon exploration to operate in Larnaca will be given space in Limassol after their permits – maximum duration of 26 months — expired.


The cabinet decisions were the clearest expression yet that Larnaca port will not be used for natural gas-related activities on a permanent basis.


The government had assured Larnaca residents that the energy companies will not be there forever, but locals worry about their health, and the town’s future as a tourist destination.
