Larnaca on the road to modernisation, Vyras says

Larnaca is modernising and overcoming many chronic problems that it has faced, the city’s mayor Andreas Vyras said on Friday.

Despite the problems due to the economic crisis and the pandemic, Vyras said the city qas becoming more beautiful and many projects had been implemented to help in this direction.

The one major project that has been undertaken was the dismantling and removal of the oil storage facilities along the Larnaca-Dhekelia road, and the other major project set to begin soon is the development of the port and marina, he said.

“Projects such as the redevelopment of the municipal garden, the creativity and culture multi-purpose centre, the first phase of street redevelopment and facilities for the disabled in the centre of Larnaca and the recently inaugurated multipurpose social welfare and employment centre of the municipality of Larnaca have also been completed,” he said.

The latter project was co-financed by the European regional development fund, within the framework of the operational programme ‘Competitiveness and Sustainable Development 2014-2020’, amounting to €4.2 million.

Next to be completed is the municipal market, and the restoration works in the Zouhouri area.

He added that they had also completed the Cyprus Institute for Marine and Maritime Research (CMMI).

Vyras said that eight new projects from the 2021-2030 programming period were at an advanced stage and expected to start soon.

“All these projects contribute to the realisation of our goal and vision for the city of Larnaca, i.e. a modern and sustainable city, humane, safe and functional for its citizens, welcoming for local and foreign visitors, and attractive to investors and the business sector,” he said.
