More Germans booking holidays to Cyprus

Cyprus saw a spike in tourism reservations from the German market at one of the industry’s biggest and most important tourism exhibitions – the ITB in Germany.

Visitors to Cyprus from Germany have declined in recent years, however it looks like this is about to change. According to the deputy director general of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) Annita Demetriades, the signs were encouraging for the whole of 2016.

Demetriades noted that the Cypriot delegation had substantive meetings in the German capital with all the major tour operators and major airlines the country and are now waiting for their proposals to be submitted, which would suggest there are very clear indications that there will be an increase of seats to be allocated to Cyprus.

However, Demetriades stressed that it was still too early to tell precisely the level of increase that Cyprus will receive. In 2015 compared to 2014, German tourism arrivals to Cyprus recorded an increase of 30%.

However, Spain, Portugal, largely Greece still remain the top tourist destinations for German visitors followed by all other European destinations.

In the 1990s German tourists to Cyprus reached and exceeded 250,000, while recent years have narrowed slightly above or slightly below the 100,000 arrivals.

It should also be noted that German travellers are high per capita spenders, have a high average length of stay compared with other tourism arrivals and prefer niche tourism offerings such as mountaineering, cycling and trekking in addition to beach holidays, which further increases the prospects and their potential to contribute to improving the island’s tourism performance this year.
