Although not yet fully operational, MountMed’s goal is the sustainable development of our country’s mountains. Its aim is to instigate research and innovation for the mountain regions of the Mediterranean islands as regards the environment, economy, demographics and culture.

The founders and supporters of the Institute are academic institutions and research centres, which will work hand in hand with the John Papadouris Foundation, the initiators of the whole effort.

MountMed will focus on developing synergies and networks, while applying the principles and strategies of the European Union, the United Nations and of other international bodies, so as to deal with today’s challenges. It also intends to collaborate with public and private sector organisations in order to further support the implementation of a National Strategic Plan for the Development of our mountain regions.

The Troodos and Pentadactylos mountain ranges are of great value to Cyprus and to a large degree, represent the island’s significant natural and cultural heritage.

The United Nations General Assembly established  December 11 as  International Mountain Day in 2002. Since then, the mountains have their own special anniversary. Every year, a different agenda is being decided, always in relation to sustainable mountain development. For 2020, it is dedicated to the rich biodiversity of mountain regions.

International Mountain Day was established to highlight the vital role of mountains in people’s lives and to remind countries of their responsibility to protect them.
