Nicosia solar park on track

Tseri’s new solar park in the Nicosia district is set to open in October as part of the EAC’s commitment to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, says authority spokesman Costas Gavrielides.

Speaking to The Cyprus Weekly, the EAC official confirmed the photovoltaic station, which covers an area of 4.6 hectares and has 12,000 solar panels will be capable of producing 5,000 MWh per year.

“It is an impressive project that will contribute significantly towards our energy sources,” said Gavrielides. “Once operational it is expected to save around 3,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year by using sun power instead of electricity produced with conventional means.”
The project is part of a tender launched by the Renewable Energy Sources fund for the sale of solar initiatives amounting to 50 MW.
The EAC was contracted to produce 3MW and the remaining 47 were awarded to several different companies in the private sector.

According to Gavrielides, the park is the next step towards reaching the national target of producing 16% of Cyprus power needs through renewable energy sources by 2020.
“At present Cyprus is producing around 6% of its total power through renewable sources and we firmly believe that the launch of this new solar project will bring us one step closer to making this ambitious target a reality.”

The official confirmed the park’s construction took place within the set timeframe and is not expected to exceed its €3.3 million budget.
“The entire project has gone according to plan and we are pleased to announce that it will be launching within the time we specified.”
The EAC, according to Gavrielides, is also progressing with plans to develop a solar park in Akrotiri capable of producing 20MW.
“Intensive efforts are underway to launch this other promising new venture. The land is on British Bases and there are a number of obstacles that must be passed first but it is definitely in the pipeline.”

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to set up the Tseri solar park was awarded to Greek company AKTOR ATE which has constructed an impressive number of photovoltaic projects in the past, capable of producing a combined 400MW. Once operational, Tseri solar park will begin selling energy for 8.6 cents per kwh.
