President seeks to reduce tax burden

President Nicos Anastasiades announced recently that the government is moving forward with a plan to cut taxes along with offering incentives for foreign investors.

Speaking at the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists federation general assembly, the President said the Finance Ministry is working with the private sector on a plan to improve taxation that would be announced soon.

While he didn’t offer any specifics, Anastasiades said that his target is clear. “We aim to be the only government in Cyprus’ history that will reduce the public debt and the tax burden imposed in the past. Heavy taxation slashes people’s income and is choking the economy.”

Anastasiades made clear that he will not be returning to policies that “in the past had derailed our economy”.

The president reiterated that the main goal for 2015 is exiting recession, restoring the country’s credit rating and completing the adjustment programme within the ten next months.
