Privatisation of commercial services and expansion of ports will bring economic growth

The Government believes that the privatisation of commercial services and the expansion of ports will bring economic growth, Minister of Communication and Works, Marios Demetriades has said.

By the end of 2015, commercial activities at the port of Limassol should be entrusted to a private investor, “not because our objective is to raise money, but to bring economic growth”, Demetriades said at the Annual General Meeting of the Maritime Agents Association, held in Limassol, on Tuesday.

“We believe that through this process we will be able to bring significant economic growth and this is something that should be embraced by everyone in the shipping industry, because it will benefit them as well as the local economy”, he noted.

The Minister said that important steps are taken to strengthen the ports and in particular the port of Limassol, where the government is in search of ways to expand the land areas.

Addressing those who are concerned about the privatisation of commercial services at the port of Limassol, Demetriades expressed confidence that “all together, through dialogue and by appointing experienced advisers, we will achieve the right result and will be able to achieve our goal, that is to enhance economic activity in our country”.

Demetriades called on all stakeholders to work together for the best possible result.
