Trilateral agreement on maritime protection

Cyprus, Greece and Israel are scheduled to sign a maritime protection agreement to safeguard the Mediterranean marine environment from risks due to hydrocarbon extraction activities.

The agreement will be signed by the environment ministers of Cyprus, Greece and Israel and is part of the trilateral cooperation between the three countries. It also marks the start of implementation of the agreements made between the three countries, a statement said.

“The agreement on protection of the Mediterranean marine environment from risks due to hydrocarbon extraction activities is particularly important because of intense activity for the extraction of hydrocarbons in the region and the risk of marine pollution from an accident,” said the statement.

The agreement provides for the preparation of an emergency plan for addressing serious marine pollution from hydrocarbons industries. The deal will provide for the mobilisation of equipment and personnel in case of emergencies. Joint training for readiness at sea will also be held.

Agriculture Minister Nicos Kouyalis who is currently in Israel for the signing of the agreement, returns to Cyprus on Thursday 7th April.
