Unemployment down by 9% in April 2015

The unemployment rate dropped in April 2015 by 9% as the number of jobless decreased by 4,207 from April 2014.

The figures released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus on Wednesday, showed that the unemployed persons, registered at the District Labour Offices on the last day of April 2015, reached 42,551 persons.

Based on the seasonally adjusted data that shows the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed for April 2015 decreased to 44,285 persons in comparison to 44,579 in the previous month, the Service said.

In comparison with April 2014 there was a decrease of 4,207 people or 9.0%, mainly observed in the sectors of construction (1,109), trade (834), financial and insurance activities (755), manufacturing (741), public administration (676), education (323) and to newcomers in the labour market (939).

The Statistical Service said however that during the same period there was an increase in registered unemployment in the sectors of accommodation and food service activities (831) and transportation (321).
