The THE World University Rankings (WUR) is possibly the best-known and most influential university rankings in the world, benchmarking institutions across their core missions: Teaching, Research, Knowledge Transfer, and International Outlook.

“This latest distinction expands upon UNic’s ranking achievements as a leading global university, essentially now among the top three per cent of universities in the world,” Rector of the University Professor Philippos Pouyioutas said.

He underscored the university’s upward trajectory in the World University Rankings, with UNic advancing its standing (from the Top 801-1,000 band last year). “Our progression into the Top 601-800 band of universities globally, correspondingly among the top 250 universities in the European Union, is a strong endorsement of the high quality and international reputation of our university, and an acknowledgment of our dedicated and pioneering efforts in implementing all facets of the Knowledge Square,” Pouyioutas added.

“More broadly, such ranking achievements are indicative of the tremendous development of the university field in Cyprus, which boasts three of the Top 1,000 universities in the world according to Times Higher Education: University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology, and the University of Nicosia. This is particularly impressive considering the island’s relatively short 30-year history in university education,” he said.

One of the core areas in which the university demonstrably continues to excel in the THEWUR is International Outlook, where UNic ranked 47th globally. “Advancing in the rankings in this core area, from number 76 in 2021 to number 47 in 2022, attests to our innovative internationalisation strategy,” added Pouyioutas.

UNic has the highest number of international degree-seeking students at any university in Cyprus by a wide margin, which is reinforced by its more than 14,000 on-campus and distance learning students from over 100 countries.
