US firms keen to invest in renewable energy in Cyprus

US firms are keen to invest in renewable energy sources in Cyprus, former secretary of state Madeleine Albright said in Nicosia recently.

Albright who is in Cyprus to push ahead with investment in the two solar thermal parks to be constructed on the island met with both President Nicos Anastasiades and Agriculture Minister Nicos Kouyialis.

She is due to also meet with the island’s Energy and Finance Ministers.

After talks with Kouyialis, the Minister said Cyprus supports the creation of such power plants from renewable sources.

And that the two large solar thermal projects will help Cyprus meet its obligations to the EU regarding the reduction of greenhouse emissions.

In addition, they will boost renewable energy sources in the economy.

”All state services work very hard towards that end… the projects will be made by US investment funds,” he added.

The two solar thermal parks will put Cyprus on the map of innovative projects which are strongly supported by the European Commission.

At the same time, Kouyialis is set to fly to New York on Friday to sign, along with other global leaders, the Paris Climate Agreement reached in Paris last December.

He said that this is an historic agreement mainly because all states are legally bound to work together to deal with greenhouse gas emissions, mitigation, adaptation and finance starting in the year 2020.
